Complete solution gives Jarlsberg tunnel the necessary safety
Safety levels in the Jarlsberg tunnel on the Norwegian Vestfold line are high. A redundant system based on an architecture using proven and tested products from Beijer Electronics is used to manage and monitor the electricity supply and safety functions in the 1,750 meter long tunnel.
For the new safety system in the Jarlsberg tunnel, there was no room for compromise. Systems and components needed to work one hundred percent. Uninterrupted communication with higher-level control systems via standardized protocols was a must.
Modular PLCs from Beijer Electronics connected to IE-fiber rings were chosen to guarantee both performance and redundancy. In the system design, the local power supply was duplicated for increased reliability. The same was true of the connections to the central train control system.
Industry and technical knowhow together with proven and tested automation products made for a cost-effective solution. Traffic control, safety functions and electricity supply in the Jarlsberg tunnel now meet the demanding requirements of the Norwegian National Rail Administration.
