Reliable and secure data transfer via PoE switches in public station surveillance


The use of comprehensive security, surveillance, and electronic access systems is increasingly becoming part of the public safety agenda in both public and private  organizations. For managing surveillance equipment, the best way is to have those devices utilize a standard communication platform. Ethernet is the natural choice as it is a proven communication backbone that offers fast and reliable service. Careful consideration must also be given to network topology, appropriate bandwidth, and system redundancy to ensure maximum reliability. Project challenges/goals

The railway authority has installed additional cameras at each station to monitor power safety and ensure secured data transfer. High-speed encrypted Ethernet packets for data transmission combined with networked security cameras could effectively assist system integrators in building the surveillance network.

Their biggest challenge was solving the power supply requirements for numerous cameras and Ethernet switches within a limited space; Beijer's PoE switch provided a practical solution. Compliant with IEEE 802.3af/at standards, the PoE switch served as a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) device. Once connected to a power source, it supplied power to multiple cameras. Beijer’s industrial-grade PoE switch can withstand various environmental conditions, including high humidity and a wide range of temperatures while providing heightened resistance against EMI/EMS interference. Most communication devices were installed
within a single cabinet and mounted with DIN-Rail in the factory. It was essential for this project to have a compact device that could be installed in a DIN-Rail clip.

Solution overview

Many cities in China are planning to install cameras at each train station to monitor the safety of power and network cables, with the video data being transferred to each station's control room.

The project required switches that could resist EMI/EMS interference. Using a PoE switch allowed for power and data transmission through a single port, thereby reducing the requirement for dual power inputs and network backups. Furthermore, POE switches were also used for monitoring power cables, network data, and collecting train data to enhance public safety during train operations.

The plan involved the collection of networking data spanning approximately 40 kilometers between each station and the control room. It also involved transmitting
video data from each train cabinet to the specific station's control room, which in turn required the implementation of redundant power supplies and backup networking assets.

Beijer offers customers a variety of port combinations and speeds to suit their specific requirements. Furthermore, Beijer's PoE switch is compliant with the IEEE 802.3af/ at standard, providing customers the flexibility to select different cameras that adhere to the same standard.

The selection of JetNet 4508f and JetCon 3401G v2 switches was based on their fiber ports, which facilitated communication and data extension among various facility subsystems covering extensive areas. These switches, characterized by their robust design, were instrumental in preventing EMI/EMS disturbances in settings like factories, rail yards, or other critical infrastructure sites. Furthermore, their wide operating temperature ranges rendered them suitable for withstanding the extreme temperature variations frequently encountered on factory floors.

The deployment of cameras in train stations, the selection of reliable Beijer technology and switches like JetNet 4508f and JetCon 3401G v2 have collectively enhanced rail network safety and efficiency. This demonstrates a successful modernization of critical infrastructure for improved public safety.
