Alarm code running single phase motor with 3-phase output BFI

​It is not possible to disconnect the 3-phase output current balance protection. Meaning it is not possible to run a single phase motor from a Drive with 3*400VAC or 3*230VAC power supply. The alarm Out-PH can not be disconnected.

Solution is to use a BFI-E3 single phase input and single phase output. It a special hardware version of BFI-E3.

Problems with EMC noise

​This problem might occur using BFI IP66 of any type, shelded motorcable were the shield is connected to the Gland plate by an EMC-gland and Modbus RTU/CanOpen being used.

If the Modbus RTU/CanOpen master is detecting loss of communication during running of the BFI it might be screws not being tightend properly. 

The gland plate in the bottom of BFI used for cable inlet into the drive is attached with either 4 or 6 screws. These screws must be properly tightend to make sure that the gland plate becomes properly grounded, connecter to protective earth. 

From factory these screws are properly tightend by a robot but in some cases customer removes the gland plate and then put it back again without tightening properly. Please, if so, double check. the tightening.

The Main circuit terminals on the smaller BFI inverters can appear to be rather small, when using 4mm2 \ 6mm2 cables. Normal connector materials for 6mm2 will often be to wide to fit the terminal width. Below is some links to fork type cable connectors that is 8mm wide for M4 screws and 4-6mm2 cables:

Input Phase Loss Detection

​To protect the BFI there is a built-in protection called Input Phase Loss Detection that can trip (stop and give an alarm) the BFI. This alarm is trigged if one of the 3 input wires on L1, L2 or L3 is lost or cut.

This protection is only available as long as output current is > 50% of rated BFI current. The rectifier inside the BFI can not be damaged as long as current does not exceed 50%.

It also gives the possibility to run a 3-phase supplied drive by only 2-phase input. This can be done during two conditions. 

• Output current is reduced by 50% of rated current of BFI.
• Input voltage Phase L1 must always be powered.

Modbus TCP gateway OPT-3-MTPEG-BFI - Reset IP address to default

To reset the IP address of the Modbus TCP gateway OPT-3-MTPEG-BFI or the BFI-E3 with built-in Modbus TCP (BFI-E3-XX-XXXX-XXXX-MTP) the following procedure must be followed, there is at the time of writing no other way to reset the devices.

To be able to perform the following steps Wirehark must be installed and can be found here, https://www.wireshark.org/download.html

1. Launch wireshark and enable it to listen to the network interface card where the gateway/inverter is connected. Use the menu Capture\Options to select which adapter to bind to.
   
   
2. Launch BFI Tools and Scan for ethernet devices, the scan will not show any found devices.
   
   
3. The Scan function will send a broadcast message to destination 255.255.255.255 to port 47850 and once received by the gateway or inverter they will start to broadcast for their default gateway.
   NOTE! The broadcasts may be blocked by antivirus/firewalls etc but normally not since it is sent as a single message and not repetibly
   In the example below we can see the broadcast (Scan) being sent on row 1 and then an ARP request from the gateway/inverter. Inverter_01:92 is the device trying to identify its default gateway IP. 192.168.111.253 is the IP address of the gateway/inverter.
   
   
4. Change the computers IP settings to the same subnet as the gateway/inverter, in this case for example 192.168.111.251. Normally the subnet mask in use is 255.255.255.0, try expanding the subnet mask if no connection is possible to 255.255.0.0.
   
   
5. Use the scan function from BFI Tools and if the previous steps where followed the device should now appear.

Control of Realy output and Analog/Digital output by Modbus RTU or CAN open

​This is available in BFI-E3 from firmware 3.10.

Relay output on terminal 10 and 11 can be controlled by both Modbus RTU and also CAN open. If P-12=3 or 4 (Modbus RTU control) or 7 or 8 (CAN open) the setting P18=12 will make the relay controllable. Bit8 in Modbus register1 or CAN object 0x2000 controll the realy output.

Digital output on terminal 8 and 9 can be controlled by both Modbus RTU and also CAN open. If P-12=3 or 4 (Modbus RTU control) or 7 or 8 (CAN open) the setting P25=12 will make the digital output controllable. Bit9 in Modbus register1 or CAN object 0x2000 controll the digital output.

To setup the communication address
By default, the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI will try to communicate with the drive that has Address 1 in the network after powering up for the first time.
The OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI will display “Scanning for Drive 01.” after power up, which indicates that the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI is searching for the drive with the correct drive address in the network. Once the drive has been found, the message “Load...” will be displayed on the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI, which indicates that the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI is reading the configuration information from the drive. Usually it will take 1~2 seconds for the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI to read this information. After the data has been loaded, the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI will display the drive real time status.
If the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI cannot find the drive in the network, i.e. there is no drive in the network with address equal to 1, the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI will display “Select drive address 01”. The user can then adjust the address from 1 to 63 by using the UP or DOWN buttons on the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI.
Once the address has been changed to a value to match that of a connected drive, the STOP button must be pressed to enable the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI to search for the drive again.

Working with Multiple Drive Networks
When the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI is used on networks with multiple drives, the user can change the drive address to set up communication with another drive in the same drive network at anytime.
Briefly pressing the STOP and DOWN buttons together results in the message “Select drive address xx” being displayed, where “xx” represents the present drive address. Use the UP or DOWN button to select the desired drive address. After selecting the new address, pressing STOP and DOWN button together again will result in OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI establishing communications with the drive that has this address.

Networks with 2 OPT-2-OPPAD-BFIs connected
A maximum of 2 OPT-2-OPPAD-BFIs can be connected within the same drive network to communicate with the same drive or different drives.
When using two OPT-2-OPPAD-BFIs simultaneously on a network, the user must change the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI Device Number on the second OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI to ensure correct operation. All OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI units are set to Device Number 1 by default.
To change the Device Number, press the NAVIGATE, STOP and DOWN buttons together. The message “Select OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI ID xx” (xx = 01 or 02) will be displayed. The User can then use the UP or DOWN buttons to change the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI Device Number to 1 or 2 as required. Press the STOP button to return to normal operation.
Note:

• Once the User has set the OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI as Device Number 2, BFI-Tools software cannot be used on the same drive network.

• The OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI Device Address should only be changed to 2 if 2 OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI units are connected on a network. An OPT-2-OPPAD-BFI with Device Number 1 must always be present for the network to function correctly.

​​Analog input BFI-E3

​​Analog input to BFI-E3 can be of either format:

- 0 to 10 V or 10 to 0 V ( One dirction) 

- 0-10 V ( 0 V=> full speed backwards, 5 V => standing still, 10 V => full speed forward 

- 4-20 mA or 20 to 4 mA

- 0-20 mA

Single phase motors run by BFI-E3/H3/P2

Beijer Electronics Frequency inverter BFI-H3 or BFI-P2 are not intended for drive of single phase motors.

BFI-E3 exists in a special version that can run single phase motors. Contact Beijer Electronics for more information.

Thermal protection inside motor connected to BFI-E3/P2/H3

An external temperature sensor located inside the motor can be connected to all BFI-models, BFI-E3/P2/H3.

The sensor is supplied with 24 VDC from the Drive.

Triplevel is a resistance above 2,5 kOhm and reset level is under 1, 9 kOhm.

The signal can also be a digital signal, like Klixon, and it is to be connected to the same terminal in the Drive.

The input is not ATEX classified.

BFI Tools wants to Update in Windows 10

When starting BFI Tools Windows wants to Update BFI Tools to 2.8.1.0 even though it is already installed. This occurrs every time BFI Tools is started.  ​

That is caused by a Windows 10 bug where ClickOnce applications are uninstalled automatically  every day.This means when the user tries to use BFI Tools they will be prompted to reinstall it.

Microsoft has solved the issue in Update KB5029331. But Beijer recommend to NOT use this since that version is a Preview and not an official OS.

Long term solution

- Wait for official OS Windows 10 were problem is solved.

- Install that version that does not exist today 230922. After that

- uninstal BFI Tools

- deactivate the PLC-licence if used

- reinstall BFI Tools

- reactivate PLC-licence

Ecodesign for BFI Frequency Inverters

​The latest Ecodesign Directive introduces International Efficiency (IE) classes for certain frequency inverters. From 1st July 2021, specified frequency inverters must meet IE2 specification. Beijer Electronics frequency inverters already meet these requirements.

The regulation covers 3-phase standard frequency inverters with a diode rectifier in the range 0.12 kW ≤ Pn < 1000 kW. After 1st July 2021, the power losses of these frequency inverters shall not exceed the maximum power losses corresponding to the IE2 efficiency level. The efficiency level is given at the nominal point.
